2015-2017 Investigator, Einstein Healthcare Network
Philadelphia, PA
Research Mentors: Drs. Amit RT Joshi and Pak Shan Leung
Assessed factors contributing to adverse outcomes and mortality in cardiac surgery patients who received a sternotomy and also underwent celiotomy within the same hospital admission utilizing the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS).
Albert Einstein Society Physician Scientist Seed Grant Finalist
Funded by Einstein Healthcare Network Surgery Department

2010-2012 Research Assistant, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics
Iowa City, IA
Research Mentors: Drs. Loreen Herwaldt and Joss Fernandez
Spearheaded project to compare the National Nosocomial Infections Surveillance System risk index and Australian Clinical Risk Index for surgical site infection after coronary artery bypass graft surgery within the UIHC system to validate the superior method within the United States.
Authored a database from electronic patient medical records and charts with over 7600 data points for quality control analysis.

2009-2012 Research Assistant, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics
Iowa City, IA
Research Mentors: Drs. Domenico Calcaterra and Karam Karam
Created new and organized existing databases with over 3300 data points from electronic patient medical records and charts to compare outcomes of off-pump vs. on-pump coronary artery bypass graft surgery. Utilized the European system for cardiac operative risk evaluation (EuroSCORE) for risk stratification between off-pump and on-pump coronary artery bypass graft surgery patients.

2008 Research Assistant, Mayo Clinic
Summer Medical Student Research Fellowship
Rochester, MN
Research Mentor: Dr. Iftikhar J. Kullo
Assessed aortic augmentation pressure and index in hospitalized patients with peripheral artery disease via pulse wave analysis utilizing radial artery applanation tonometry. Study included assessment of the same parameters using the same technique on patients undergoing surgical or percutaneous revascularization for peripheral artery disease.
Performed radial artery applanation tonometry on patients with or without peripheral artery disease referred for dobutamine stress echocardiography to assess the relationship of aortic index to ischemic threshold and burden.
Study required autonomous one-on-one patient interaction in novel project that demanded extensive technological training and skill.

2006 Research Assistant, University of Maryland Medical Center
Baltimore, MD
Research Supervisor: Dr. Robert S. Poston
Analyzed and compared morbidity in off-pump vs. on-pump coronary artery bypass graft surgery. Assessed biochemical markers and performed immunohistological assays.
Assessed graft patency at 6 months to 1 year status post off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery.
Organized database with over 5000 data points from electronic patient medical records and charts. Responsible for follow-up from contacting patient and scheduling chest CT to accompanying patient and explaining proceedings.
Used novel infrared in situ catheter based imaging system (optical coherence tomography) to assess coronary artery bypass conduits (radial artery and saphenous vein grafts) prior to use.
Pilot study of “hybrid” minimally invasive coronary artery bypass (MIDCAB) with stented angioplasty.

2006 Research Assistant, University of Maryland School of Medicine
Minority Short Term Research Training Program (Heart, Lung and Blood)
Baltimore, MD
Research Supervisor: Dr. Robert S. Poston
Comparison of non-pulsatile and pulsatile types and specific models of left ventricular assist devices for correlation to increased neurological events.

2005 Student Researcher, Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine
Philadelphia, PA
Research Supervisor: Dr. Lindon Young
Evaluated compounds that can attenuate ischemia/reperfusion injury during organ transplantation in an in vivo rat model.

2004, 2005 Research Assistant, Philadelphia Futures Program, Eastern University
St. Davids, PA
Research Supervisor: Dr. Marvin Meyer
Measured and analyzed chemical components and biological specimens of local waters to assess and document health of the Pennsylvania Schkyll watershed.
Overseer of chemical proceedings for the biology laboratory and field assistant
