Maria Parham Health Breaks Ground on New Behavioral Health Unit

November 19, 2018

Maria Parham Health, part of Duke LifePoint Healthcare, recently hosted a groundbreaking ceremony in advance of beginning construction on a new 20-bed adult behavioral health facility, which will be called Maria Parham Franklin Behavioral Health.

Representatives from the hospital and Duke LifePoint Healthcare joined community leaders, elected officials, health care providers and other supporters to ceremoniously break ground on the new facility.

Construction is scheduled to begin in January, and Maria Parham Franklin Behavioral Health is set to open its doors to the public in the fourth quarter of 2019.

“We are excited to begin phase two of our work to restore access to high quality health care and further expand the services available in Louisburg and surrounding areas,” said Bert Beard, chief executive officer of Maria Parham Health. "This future facility will enable us to serve more patients who are in need of vital behavioral health services and represents our ongoing commitment to caring for the people of Franklin County."

In October, Maria Parham Health opened a new facility called Maria Parham Franklin, which houses an emergency department and inpatient geriatric behavioral health unit that provides specialized care for adults 55 years and older. Spanning 14,900 square feet, the planned 20-bed adult behavioral health unit will adjoin the current facility and serve patients 18 years and older. Services provided will include evaluation and treatment of a wide range of psychiatric needs in an inpatient setting.

"Having access to behavioral health services close to home has been a growing need in this area for quite some time,” said Dr. Lisardo Augustin, medical director for Maria Parham Behavioral Health services. “It is exciting to think that next year, this bare construction site will be a first-class facility dedicated to serving the behavioral health needs of this community, and we are eager to see it take shape in the months ahead."

The capital investment for the full Maria Parham Franklin campus project will total more than $16 million upon the completion of both phases, all of which has been made possible by Duke LifePoint Healthcare, The Dorothea Dix Hospital Property Fund, The Golden Leaf Foundation and the North Carolina Department of Commerce through the North Carolina Community Development Block Grant. The Maria Parham Franklin Behavioral Health project makes up approximately $10 million of the total investment.

“Today marks another meaningful milestone in Duke LifePoint's efforts to advance care in Franklin County,” said Harry Phillips, III, M.D., chief medical officer of Duke Network Services. “This important project will help further close the gap in care that this community has faced for a number of years, and we look forward to the many ways it will positively impact the health of this region."
