WE CAN help mother and baby succeed in breastfeeding.

Breastfeeding Support

Breastfeeding is very important and the team at Maria Parham is here to support you during your stay and after you return home. The American Academy of Pediatrics' recommendation is to exclusively breastfeed for the first six months and to continue breastfeeding for the first year and beyond, as long as it is mutually desired by mother and child.

Breastfeeding Classes are offered free of charge at Maria Parham to learn more, please call the Lactation Department at 252-436-1414. These classes allow for mother and dad/support person to learn the basics of breastfeeding and prepares them to be able to overcome challenges faced while breastfeeding.

In-Home Breastfeeding Support

In an effort to increase initiation and duration of breastfeeding, MPMC and Smart Start offer a free In-Home Breastfeeding Support Program for mothers in Franklin, Granville, and Vance Counties. This program provides support to breastfeeding mothers. Home visits are routinely made within 72 hours of hospital discharge with a goal to monitor breastfeeding and assist in the challenging transition of this rewarding experience.  The program also helps prepare mom for the transition back to work so that she can continue to provide breast milk for her baby.  For more information, call 252-436-1414. Our Breastfeeding Support Team looks forward to working with you and your new baby!

Breast is Best

Interesting Facts

  • Breastmilk has over 100 nutrients that are not in formula

  • Baby's tummy is the size of a walnut and 1/2 of its full of amniotic fluid when born and even more so after a c-section delivery, so they don't need volume

  • A baby only needs about 1/2-1 teaspoon of colostrum and it provides more nutrients than 1/2 an oz of formula

  • Since breastmilk is made for human babies it is digested much easier and more quickly, so the infant may nurse more often, every 1 1/2 to 3 hours is normal
