Rehabilitation Patient Spends Part of Special Day at Maria Parham

Ms. Rosa Bullock from Manson came to an appointment at the Comprehensive Outpatient Rehabilitation Clinic (CORF) at Maria Parham Medical Center recently, as she has a few times each week since suffering a stroke in May.  Today’s visit was a little different than the others, however, because she was presented with a cake, a banner, and several balloons.  Bullock was having a birthday, and not just ANY birthday…….. her 100th birthday!

Her daughter, Dorothy, who brought her mother to the appointment, says that Bullock is quite ‘spunky’ and is in very good health overall, despite her stroke 4 months ago.  Bullock began with a more extensive rehab regimen, including physical therapy, but has now graduated to only needing speech therapy.  When noted that some physicians may not order extensive rehabilitation for a patient her age, Bullock’s daughter said that was one of the first things her physician said, after her mother’s stroke.  “He said, ‘We’ll need to set your mother up for physical therapy too…..she’s a perfect candidate’, her daughter remembers.

When Bullock was jokingly asked if all the therapists had been treating her well during her time at Maria Parham, she replied “part of the time”, with a twinkle in her eye.  Her daughter explained, laughing, “Mom jokes that they work her too hard!”  Evidently all that hard work has paid off, because Bullock is doing very well physically and still knows how to get all those within earshot laughing.  Quite an accomplishment for a beautiful lady with a few years under her belt!
