Longtime Volunteers Honored at Maria Parham Medical Center
The seven individuals pictured above have 25 years or more of volunteer service to Maria Parham Medical Center. Pictured left to right are Myrtle White, Dave Foster, Joe Mahaffey, Hattie Williams, Susie Vick, Alice Watkins and Linda Wells. Ten other volunteers have between 15 and 24 years of volunteering time at the hospital. They are Carol Dorsey, Jean Mahaffey, Martha Richardson, Mary Ann Evans, Betty Raynor, Helen Harris, Mary Ann Smith, Iris Simmons, Etta Briggs and Frank Sossamon. The nearly 80 active volunteers at Maria Parham have given an amazing total of 585 years of service.
“We thank these individuals for their tireless dedication to our hospital. They volunteer a combined total of nearly 11,000 hours each year. Many also give their time to help with fundraisers we offer to employees and our community. These events raise $15,000 annually,” says Kathy Caudle, Director of Volunteer/Guest Services at Maria Parham Medical Center. She continues, “We are so fortunate to have these wonderful individuals from our community serve as hospital volunteers.”
Myrtle White, who has volunteered at Maria Parham for nearly 33 years, feels that she benefits from doing it, as much as the hospital benefits from her help. She says that it gives her great joy to help others and mentions that one of her duties is to help answer the phone at the front desk and transfer calls up to patients’ rooms. “My greatest joy, though, is getting a wheelchair for someone who is slow in walking and taking them where they need to go. The kind words they say about the way they are given help makes it all worthwhile,” says White.
