Lamaze Certified Childbirth Classes Offered at MPMC

1/5/2010

Maria Parham Offers

Finding out from the doctor that you are expecting a baby usually makes the new mom-to-be very happy, but then fear and questions begin to surface. This is especially true if this is your first child. Nothing can prepare you fully for pregnancy, childbirth, and the time shortly afterwards, but having as much information as you can about it can make a mom-to-be feel less nervous.

Lamaze certified childbirth classes offer a wealth of information and help expectant moms to be more confident about the birth process. These valuable classes are offered regularly by Maria Parham Medical Center. The next class will begin January 18th. Course content includes education covering the last few weeks of pregnancy, through labor, delivery, and post partum. Some of the topics discussed are comfort measures, the role of support persons, movement and positions, and environment during labor; and information on breastfeeding.

“Our goal is to join with ‘Passion for Birth’ (an organization that trains individuals on childbirth education) to eliminate boring, old-style childbirth classes. We make our classes fun, interactive and very informative,” says Jackie Ross, RN, a Lamaze certified Lactation Consultant for Maria Parham Medical Center. Ross continues, “We want participants to know that birth is a normal, natural and healthy experience. We inform both the mom and their support person about different interventions that can take place during labor, and we strive to educate them with up-to-date, research-based information. This enables them to make well-educated decisions prior to, during, and after giving birth.” Ross is the instructor for the 6 week long class. She is assisted by Sandy Moss-Arnold, CNA, who is Lamaze trained.

The next class will begin January 18 at 6:30 pm at the hospital. Expectant moms who are between their 5th and 8th month of pregnancy are eligible to take the class. You do not have to be a Vance County resident. Class size is limited, the fee is $50, and anyone who is interested in taking the course must call (252) 436-1881 to register. If you have questions about the class, please call Ross at (252) 436-1414.
