April Lunch & Learn Scheduled @ Maria Parham
4/21/2011
Maria Parham Medical Center and the Granville Vance District Health Department are hosting a FREE Lunch & Learn Program on Monday, April 25th. The topic will be “Got Public Health?”, and the speaker will be Shasheena Atkins, Public Health Educator with the Granville Vance District Health Department.
Each year, one week in April is celebrated as Public Health Week. Organizations use that week to especially focus on ways to improve public health across the country. The topic ‘public health’ encompasses many areas of safety and wellness—from more obvious ones like eating healthy foods and getting plenty of exercise to ones that aren’t thought of immediately, like trying to prevent injuries and accidental poisoning. According to the American Public Health Association, injury is the most expensive medical problem in the United States. In a single year, $80 billion will be spent on medical care, with another $326 billion spent on lost productivity. In many cases, these costs are increasing because preventative measures are not being taken to prevent injuries.
Anyone with an interest in this topic is encouraged to come. A complimentary lunch will begin at 11:30 AM in the hospital Classroom, and the presentation will begin at Noon in the hospital Auditorium. Please call Lee Anne Peoples at (252) 436-1116 by Saturday, April 23rd at Noon if you’d like to be included for lunch. If you have left a voice mail message by that time on that phone number, you will be guaranteed a lunch before the program.
